Neath East Communities First - Melincryddan Community Conference

Education & Training

What we will do: The Melincryddan Community Conference assisted by Communities First Staff will develop the Payne Street IT Training Centre/Cyber Zone. This work will be further assisted by the MCC's own Youth IT Inclusion Workers (to be employed), funders and other support organisations. There are there areas that will be developed; the physical facility (building and IT suite), the management structure and the curriculum. The Partnership and Staff Team will continue to help and support local organisation and clubs with their development, work with schools to assist their community involvement and will seek opportunities to run projects that will engage volunteers in peer to peer training. We will also seek opportunities for intergenerational projects. The prospect for local venues to be used more frequently for education and training programmes will be sought and any courses provided will be promoted.
Why we are doing this: The Payne Street IT Training Centre/Cyber Zone when fully operational will help community members gain IT skills. IT literacy will be raised and digital exclusion will be reduced. Opportunities for local people to gain new skills in areas such as Family History, Digital Photography, languages and IT will be facilitated so to improve quality of life, activity, confidence and basic skills. The Youth IT Inclusion Workers will increase the engagement with and the IT skills and confidence of young people. Work with local organisation and clubs will increase the membership and skills of the groups. Work with schools will reduce age related divides and increase active citizenship as will intergenerational projects. Peer to peer training will increase to activity of more local people and will aid sustainability. The local provision of educational and training course will help more local people to get back into the habit of learning increasing their quality of life. This also links in with the work of the Melin Advice Centre.
